Types of 4×4 Lift Kits Explained

Not all lift kits are the same — and choosing the wrong type for your vehicle and use case is the most common and costly mistake 4WD owners make. Our mechanics will help you understand the difference before recommending anything.

Suspension Lift Kits (Most Popular)

A suspension lift raises both the body and suspension of the vehicle by replacing or upgrading shock absorbers, coil springs, leaf springs, or strut assemblies. This is the most comprehensive upgrade and provides:

  • Greater ground clearance — typically 50mm (2 inches) to 100mm+ (4 inches)
  • Increased suspension travel for improved off-road articulation
  • Ability to fit larger aftermarket tyres
  • Better approach, departure, and breakover angles
  • Improved load-carrying and towing performance when matched correctly

Suspension lifts are what we specialise in. They’re the right choice for any serious off-road use, touring, or towing upgrade.

Body Lift Kits

A body lift raises the vehicle body on its chassis using spacer blocks, without changing the suspension geometry. This allows fitting larger tyres and a taller appearance but provides no actual improvement to suspension travel, ground clearance under axles, or off-road performance. Best suited for aesthetic upgrades on a budget where off-road capability is not a priority.

Levelling Kits

A levelling kit corrects the nose-down factory stance on utes and SUVs by adding a small lift (typically 25–40mm) to the front only. Popular with tradespeople and fleet vehicles carrying front-end accessories like bull bars, winches, and driving lights. Inexpensive and roadworthy compliant within standard limits.

Suspension Lift Kit Brands We Supply & Install

All Care Automotive is an authorised Climax Suspension specialist and stocks kits from six of Australia’s most trusted 4WD suspension brands. Here’s our honest assessment of each — based on 21 years of fitting these products to Melbourne vehicles:

Brand Strength Why All Care recommends it
Tough Dog Australian-made Premium foam cell shocks with outstanding fade resistance. Best for serious corrugated tracks and remote touring. Our most-recommended brand for dedicated off-road use.
Bilstein German engineering Monotube gas-pressure technology delivering consistent handling on both highway and technical terrain. Excellent for dual-purpose daily-driver/off-road builds.
Ironman 4×4 Best value Strong all-round kits at accessible price points. Nitro and Foam Cell range suits weekend warriors and tradespeople wanting a reliable lift without specialist pricing.
Lovells Australian-made Spring and shock combinations precision-engineered for Australian conditions. Excellent for load-carrying and towing upgrades — popular with caravanners.

Our 4×4 Lift Kit Installation Process

Every lift kit installation at All Care Automotive follows a consistent, quality-controlled process — the same process whether it’s a simple levelling kit or a full 4-inch suspension upgrade on a LandCruiser 200.

  1. Step 1: Vehicle assessment & kit selection

We inspect your vehicle, discuss your intended use (daily driving, off-road, towing), and recommend the lift height and brand that genuinely suits your needs. We’ll also flag any existing suspension wear that should be addressed at the same time.

  1. Step 2: Transparent quote provided

You receive a fixed-price quote covering kit cost, labour, and wheel alignment. No surprises. We don’t start work until you’re happy with the scope and price.

  1. Step 3: Lift kit fitment by experienced 4WD mechanics

Our mechanics install the kit using proper lifting equipment in our 20-bay Brunswick workshop. Every component is torqued to manufacturer specification. Typical installation time is 3–5 hours depending on lift type and vehicle.

  1. Step 4: Post-fitment wheel alignment

Included with every lift installation. Lifting a 4WD changes suspension geometry, so alignment is essential — not optional. We use computerised alignment equipment calibrated to your vehicle’s post-lift specifications.

  1. Step 5: Roadworthy compliance check

We visually inspect the completed installation to confirm it meets Victorian RWC requirements. If you require a formal Roadworthy Certificate — for sale, re-registration, or peace of mind — we issue it from the same workshop. No need to book a separate inspection elsewhere.

  1. Step 6: Post-install briefing

We walk you through what was done, what to expect in the first 500km (break-in period for new shocks), and when to return for the recommended check-up tighten (typically 1,000km post-install).

Roadworthy Compliant Lift Kits — What You Need to Know in Victoria

Under Victorian road regulations, suspension modifications to 4WD vehicles must comply with the following limits:

Victoria’s Legal Lift Limits (Suspension)

  • Up to 50mm (2 inches): Permissible without an engineer’s certificate in most cases — subject to inspection
  • 51mm to 150mm: Requires an engineer’s certificate and compliance plate (we can advise on this process)
  • Over 150mm: Not permitted for road-registered vehicles

What Affects Roadworthy Compliance?

A lift kit installation must not adversely affect any of the following to remain roadworthy:

  • Steering geometry and component integrity
  • Brake system operation and lines
  • Tyre-to-body clearance (full steering lock, full suspension compression)
  • Headlight alignment (height changes affect throw angle)
  • Towbar/tow ball height (must remain within ADR limits)
  • Suspension component angles (CV joints, diff drop requirements)

All Care Automotive’s mechanics have 21 years of experience fitting roadworthy-compliant lift kits. We work exclusively with kits engineered and tested to Australian Design Rules. If there’s any doubt about compliance on your specific vehicle, we will tell you before fitting — not after.

Why Choose All Care Automotive for Your 4×4 Lift Kit?

✓  21 Years of 4WD Experience in Brunswick

Since 2003, we have been building, lifting, and maintaining 4WDs for Melbourne’s off-road community. Our mechanics have hands-on experience with every major platform — from Hilux and Patrol to LandCruiser and Defender. This isn’t a sideline service — it’s a genuine specialisation.

✓  Authorised Climax Suspension Specialists

We are an authorised supplier and installer for Climax Suspension products — one of Australia’s leading 4WD suspension distributors. This means we have direct access to the full range across all supported brands, with product knowledge backed by the distributor.

✓  VACC Accredited — Not Just Any Mechanic

Victorian Automobile Chamber of Commerce accreditation means our mechanics meet strict professional standards for workmanship and ongoing training. When you’re lifting a vehicle — a modification that directly affects steering, braking, and rollover risk — accreditation matters.

✓  Wheel Alignment Included on Every Lift

Some workshops fit lift kits and let you drive away without an alignment. We don’t. Every lift installation at All Care includes a computerised wheel alignment as standard — because without it, the job isn’t done.

✓  RWC Licensed — One-Stop Compliance

We are a licensed Roadworthy Certificate issuer in Victoria. After your lift kit installation, you can have your compliance check and RWC issued without leaving the workshop. This saves you time and eliminates the risk of another inspector flagging the work.

✓  Fixed Pricing, No Surprises

You’ll receive a fixed price before we start. If we identify any additional items (worn ball joints, tired shocks, rusted u-bolts) during the installation, we call you first. We never do work without your approval.

Frequently Asked Questions – FAQ

How much does a lift kit cost in Melbourne?

A 2-inch (50mm) suspension lift kit starts from around $680 supply and fit at All Care Automotive, including wheel alignment. A 3-inch lift starts from $950 and a 4-inch lift from $1,280. Final pricing depends on your vehicle make and model and the specific brand of kit selected. Call us on (03) 9384 0401 for a free quote on your vehicle.

Is a 2-inch lift legal on Victorian roads?

A 50mm (2-inch) suspension lift is generally permissible on Victorian roads without an engineer’s certificate, provided it does not adversely affect steering geometry, braking, tyre clearance, or other roadworthy requirements. All Care Automotive fits only kits certified to Australian Design Rules and performs a compliance check after every installation. If your specific vehicle has known compliance issues at 50mm, we will advise you before fitting.

Do I need a Roadworthy Certificate after fitting a lift kit?

In Victoria, a lift kit modification does not automatically require a new Roadworthy Certificate — however, if you are re-registering, selling the vehicle, or your vehicle was defected by police, you will need one. All Care Automotive is a licensed Roadworthy Certificate issuer. We can perform the compliance check and issue the RWC from the same workshop immediately after installation.

How long does a lift kit installation take?

A 2-inch lift on a modern ute typically takes 3–4 hours. A 3–4 inch lift on a larger platform (LandCruiser, Patrol, Pajero) takes 4–6 hours. This includes the post-fitment wheel alignment. We will give you an accurate time estimate when you book.

What lift height should I choose?

For most daily-driver/weekend off-road builds, a 2-inch (50mm) lift is the sweet spot — it improves ground clearance significantly, allows most common larger tyre sizes, and keeps you within standard roadworthy parameters without needing engineering certification. A 3-inch lift suits dedicated off-road or remote touring builds. 4 inches and above is for serious enthusiasts building for extreme terrain. Our mechanics will discuss your actual use case and recommend honestly.
